Rescued from a barn in Lancashire, this hand made mid century desk showed no signs of damage and the owners had wanted it to go to a loving home after being fixed up.
Processes and Products.
I brought the desk to my workshop earlier this year and let it rest for a few months before the processes began.
I sourced just two paints for the scheme, Annie Sloan Old Ochre chalk paint as the neutral for the outer and ReColour Terrific Teal chalky paint for the 'colour pop' interior and the surface pattern.
After a thorough vacuuming and cleaning session with the desk, I began work on the inside compartments, the trickiest areas to paint. I gave these two coats of Teal furniture paint with overnight drying between coats.
I also painted the large deep shelves in Teal and let them dry thoroughly using precision brushes on the edges where the drop-down closed against the outer edges of the desk.
I used three coats of Old Ochre on the outer edges and the back of the desk, and also to give a fluid look to the casing I painted the tapered legs in it too.
I sealed and finished the outer casing, shelves and drop down with Annie Sloan clear wax.
Functionality.
The desk is solid, well made and sturdy. The drop down is on strong hinges and I had no problems with it staying in place. There are no chains or supports other than the extremely clever design and precise joinery - all the weight is held by the well put together design of the drop down writing area.
Styling.
The desk is shown here against a white backdrop in natural and staged light.
The desk will work in a contemporary well styled home, its a strong stylised iconic shape, and the colour palette is both neutral and statement at the same time so it should fit in well with most colour schemes and stand out as a good functional focal point.

A refurbished item, stored and restored in a clean large smoke free workshop space. Requires no assembly - will arrive ready to use.
